Yard Machines 357 cc Gas Powered Snow Thrower

When the snow starts falling in abundance some people think of snowball fights and snowmen, but I always think about the painful shoveling that lies ahead. That’s because I’m still one of those old-fashioned folks clearing my driveway with a wooden handled snow shovel. I think it’s about time that I ditched that trusted old friend and manned up to a gas-powered snowblower. There’s no doubt it’s a bit of an expense, but it will probably pay for itself in no time with the savings on medical bills.

A little bit of research has led me to the Yard Machines 357 cc OHV 4-Cycle Gas Powered Snow Thrower. This machine appears to have everything I’m looking for in a powerful snow removal machine that’s not priced completely out of reach.

Don’t Worry about Drifts

This snow blower by Yard Machines really does cut through the deepest of snow and it does it with ease. It’s designed to cut a path that’s 30 inches wide by 21 inches deep – that’s a lot of snow-clearing capability. If you’ve ever experienced a major blizzard you’re probably well aware that the worst problem to deal with isn’t the actual snowfall, it’s the drifting snow that poses the biggest challenge. They might only be calling for 6 inches of snowfall, but if you’ve got 6 feet piled up in one corner of your driveway you’re facing a bit of an issue. With this machine you should have no problem trimming that drift down to size.

It also has a 12-inch steel auger and impeller that’s designed to cut through the heaviest and wettest snow. Some of the cheaper snow blower models have plastic augers that just don’t cut it. These tend to clog up easily and wear out sooner than you’d like. With this machine’s steel auger you can expect many great years of service.

A Little Power Helps

The other reason that the Yard Machines snow thrower is able to cut through so much snow is the sheer power of its engine. It has a standard 357 cc 4-Cycle engine that’s built to handle just about anything you can throw at it. To make it even easier, it’s self-propelled and comes with 6 forward gears and 2 reverse gears which allow you to work at your own pace. You don’t have to worry about your back giving out because this machine does most of the work for you. That little fact definitely caught my attention as I know what back pain is all about.

Steady As She Goes

If there’s one thing that’s not in dispute, it’s the fact that this 4-cycle gas powered snow blower grips to the surface of your driveway no matter how much snow or ice is built up underneath it. That’s because it comes standard with Yard Machines 16” x 4.8” Snow Hog tires. That’s a huge pair of wheels and the tread is just as thick and impressive. When you cut through the snow with this machine you can be sure that you’ll keep a straight line all the time. There’s nothing worse than slipping and sliding around the driveway while you’re trying to clear the snow.

Bonus Points

This snow blower not only does a great job of clearing the snow from the driveway, it also has a couple of extra features to make your life easier. To light your way it has a built-in headlight system that illuminates quite a wide path in front of you – which is good for me because most of my snow clearing is done in the wee hours of the morning before the sun even pops up over the horizon. The other great bonus feature of this machine is that it comes with an electric start, so you don’t have to worry about sore shoulders from wrenching on a pull cord for half an hour.

It’s Not All Roses

While this machine has a heck of a lot going for it, it’s not without issues. The main problem with it is that it weighs 250 pounds, so you won’t be able to just quickly swing this one up into your pickup truck to head over and help your family members with their driveways. It’s also going to take up a bit of room in your garage. It’s a good thing that it has such a great set of tires for traction, because you’d have quite a difficult time trying to push this thing around your driveway if it didn’t stick to it so well.

Definitely on the Short List

Overall Yard Machines 30-Inch self-propelled snow thrower is an excellent machine. If you live in an environment like mine where there’s a lot of snow in the winter, this is the type of machine you’re looking for. It’s got a powerful engine, it’s easy to start, and it grips the snow and ice without any bother. It is certainly a little on the expensive side, but to get a quality machine like this you’re bound to pay a little more for it.
